The Invocations of Blessings and Peace

Trans by Khalid Williams from ‘Abwab al-Faraj’ by the esteemed Sheikh Muhammad bin Alawi al-Maliki al-Hassani, may Allah forgive and be pleased with him, who died in Makkah in Ramadan, 2004

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Among the greatest means of obtaining ease in times of hardship is invocating blessings and peace upon the Prophet of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself clarified for us how in a tradition narrated by Ubai bin Ka’ab رضي الله عنه , who said;

‘I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I supplicate often, so how much of my supplication should I devote to you?’ He replied, ‘as you desire’. I said, ‘a quarter of it?’ He said ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’ I said, ‘half of it?’ He said, ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’ I said, ‘two-thirds of it?’ He said again, ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’ Finally I said, ‘and if I dedicate my supplication in its entirety to you?’ He said, ‘then your needs will be satisfied, and your sins forgiven.’[1]

It is clear that he whom Allah satisfies his worldly needs has been truly blessed with Allah’s kindness and mercy. He also has been given security from all that he fears, and has attained the utmost protection from all harm and evils; indeed he is carried aboard the ship of salvation. This means he is secure from all things which create worries and needs, secure from poverty, debt, subjugation, weakness, disease, fear, and all other calamities and disasters; he has guaranteed that his worldly affairs will be upright and good. . And should he obtain, alongside this, forgiveness from the sins and salvation from the perils of the Day of Resurrection, so that he may enter Paradise in peace, he has most certainly guaranteed that his affairs in the Hereafter will be good and upright, too.

What more could the worshipper require besides this? And all of this is obtained through invoking blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم ; with it lies the key to guaranteeing goodness in the affairs of this life, and in the Hereafter.

We will now give mention to some of the benefits of invocating blessings and peace upon our Master Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , by way of drawing from the works of the scholars of Islam, namely Sheikh ibn al-Qayyim, and Sheikh ibn Hajar al-Haytami:

1 Responding to the order of Allah, Exalted and Magnificent.[2]

2 Following the lead of Allah, Exalted and Magnificent in the sending of blessings upon His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم , although the blessings (Salawat) differ, being from us supplication and request, and being from Allah exaltation and ennoblement.

3 Following the Angels in invocation of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم , also.

4 The attainment of ten blessings from Allah for the one who invokes one blessing upon His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم .[3]

5 He who sends blessing upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , Allah raises him by ten degrees.

6 He also has written for him ten good deeds.

7 He also has erased from his record ten bad deeds.[4]

8 The invocation increases the chance of one's supplication being answered if it follows the supplication, as the invocation of blessings upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم lifts those supplications up to the Lord of the Worlds which were stalled between the heavens and the earth. [5]

9 It is a means to receive the intercession of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , whether or not a specific intercession is sought.

10 It is a means to have one's sins forgiven.

11 It is a means for Allah to satisfy his bondman’s worldly needs.

12 It is a means to draw near to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم on the Day of Resurrection.[6]

13 It compensates for giving charity for those who are too poor to give it.

14 It is a means of fulfilling one's needs (Qada’ al-Hawa’ij)

15 It is a means to receive the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم 's blessings, and the Angels likewise.[7]

16 It is a means of purification for he who invokes it.

17 For one who sends blessings on him صلى الله عليه وسلم it is glad tidings in his life that he has been granted his place in Paradise as is mentioned by Al-Hafiz Abu Musa in his book on the matter, for which he brought Hadith as evidence.

18 It is a means of salvation from the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, as also mentioned by Abu Musa with evidence.

19 It is a means for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to return the blessings and greeting upon he who invokes it.[8]

20 It is a means of ennobling a meeting or gathering and a means to prevent any ill talk or conduct occurring therein, so that it will not return upon its participants as a hardship on the Day of Resurrection.[9]

21 It is a means to remember something which has been forgotten.

22 It is a safeguard against poverty.

23 It saves one from being branded a miser if one were to omit it upon the Prophet’s name صلى الله عليه وسلم being mentioned.[10]

24 It saves one from being cursed and disgraced because the one who omits the blessings and prayers upon hearing the Prophet's name صلى الله عليه وسلم risks receiving Allah's anger.[11]

25 It keeps the one who invokes it steadfast upon the path to Paradise, and keeps he who neglects it from traveling the path.

26 It safeguards a meeting from turning ill; a meeting without the mention of Allah Exalted and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم , and without the praise and glorification of Allah and the invocation of blessings on His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم has no blessing nor benefit.

27 It is a cause for the perfection of any speech which begins with the praise of Allah the Exalted and the blessings of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم .

28 It is a cause for the bondman to find light cast in abundance in his life to guide him on the Straight Path.

29 It refines the worshipper's character and manners.

30 It is a means for Allah to preserve those in the heavens and the earth praising and commending he who invokes it.

31 It is a means of the worshipper to obtain blessing for himself in his work, life and provision.

32 It is a means of obtaining the mercy of Allah.

33 It sustains, increases and multiplies love for the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , which is among the core bases of Faith, without which faith cannot be complete.

34 It earns the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم love for the bondsman.

35 It is a means of the worshipper’s guidance, and a source of vitality for his heart.

36 It causes the worshipper’s name to be shown to the Prophet, and the mention of the worshipper to him صلى الله عليه وسلم .[12]

37 It is a means for the worshipper to find ease upon crossing the pass over the Hellfire.

38 Invoking blessing and peace upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is an infinitesimal recompense of his right upon us, and of the thanks which we owe for the grace which Allah has bestowed upon us by sending him صلى الله عليه وسلم , although what he truly deserves is innumerable, either for us to comprehend or to bestow, or even to will. However Allah, because of His Boundless Generosity, is pleased with his bondsmen even with the small amount of thanks they can offer.

39 Invoking blessing and peace upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in itself contains remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and is an expression of thanks to Him and a recognition of His immense favour upon His bondsmen by sending him صلى الله عليه وسلم .

Appendix

It is narrated[13] that Abu Ja’far, the Commander of the Believers, asked Imam Malik, ‘O Abu Abdullah! Should I face the Qiblah and supplicate, or face the Prophet of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and supplicate?’ Malik replied, ‘and why would you turn your face away from him, and he is your intercessor, and the intercessor of your father Adam عليه السلام on the Day of Judgement? Face him, and seek his intercession, for Allah has said: “If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto you and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.”’[14]

Praising the Nabi

On Praising the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
by Mas'ud Ahmed Khan

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Allah (ta'ala) says in the Glorious Qur'an (Surah 33:56):
"Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation."

The very name "Muhammad" means "the one who is praised, often praised" and the name of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is also known as "Ahmad" meaning "the one deserving of praise".

Imam Jalaludin as-Suyuti mentions:

His name is Muhammad and Ahmad; his people are the people of praise (hamd)- and his prayer rite and the prayer rite of his people is opened with praise (hamd). In the Preserved Tablet in God's abode it was written that his Caliphs and his Companions in writing the Sacred Volume, should open it with praise (Surah 1:1). And in his hand on the Resurrection Day will be the banner of praise. And when he then prostrates himself before God in intercession in our behalf and it is accepted he will praise the Lord with a new song that shall then be revealed to him, for his is the Heavenly Station of Praise (al-maqam al-mahmud, Surah 17:79)-and when he rises up in that Station all the assembly shall praise him, Muslims and misbelievers alike, the first and the last, and all meanings and modes of thankful praise shall be gathered up and offered to him. [quoted from And Muhammad is His Messenger by Annemarie Schimmel p. 107]

There are those naysayers that may object on the grounds that too much praising will lapse Muslims into the major sin of shirk, to this Imam al-Busiri in his amazing Qasidah al-Burdah says:

Leave what the Christians have said about their Prophet!
And then affirm what you will in praise, and do so with excellence.

It is clear that sending praise, blessings and salutations on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is a general obligation on each and every Muslim as mentioned by Qadi Iyad in the Shifa, and if we keep Imam al-Busiri's principle in mind then there is no danger of falling into the trap that the Christians have fallen into with Sayyidina Isa عليه السلام.

Unfortunately, we live in an age where very few Muslims actually know their Prophet. He is the fountainhead of our guidance and the light by which we tread the straight path, and yet Muslims in general and Muslim children in particular, know more about their favourite pop star, footballer or film actor and our Prophet is as a stranger to them. How can this be? Why have we forgotten the one whom Allah has commanded us to send salutations and blessings upon? Again it comes down to the age in which we live; no more are there special chairs in our masajid where the Sirah or the Shifa' of Qadi Iyad or the Shama'il of Tirmidhi are read in perpetuity to the faithful as was once the practice throughout the Muslim world. The Mawlid-celebrations of the birth and life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم - are frowned upon by certain sections of the community. Our mosques are ill equipped to teach our children anything besides the reading of the Holy Qur'an and the very basics of the faith, which, while important, are insufficient to the long term spiritual and religious development of our community and especially our children who are our future. We have to look at ways in which we can help to nurture the love and familiarity that are missing. From hadith literature we know how important it is to love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم : Bukhari and Muslim report - "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves his children, his parents, and all people."
In another hadith in Bukhari the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves himself."

Importance of Praising the Prophet (saw)

Importance of Praising the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
by Ismail Ebrahim

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
It is among the prescriptions of the Shari'ah (Islamic Law) to recite Salutations and Blessings upon Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم as is evident in the following Qur’anic verse : "Undoubtedly, Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet (the Communicator of Unseen News), O you who believe ! Send upon him blessings and salute him fully well in abundance"
[Surah al-Ahzab, Verse 56].

Allah Almighty in the Holy Qur’an has enjoined the performance of many things by us such as Salaat, Fasting, Hajj etc. and has praised His Prophets and described their good qualities.
He created Sayyidina Adam عليه السلام and directed the Angels to make sajda (prostration) to him. However, he does not say in any of His directions, "I (Allah) am doing it, therefore you should do likewise". This honor was exclusively conferred upon our Beloved Prophet Sayyidina Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم . Here, in the above verse, Allah Almighty at the very outset attributed salawat (recital of blessings) on our Beloved Prophet Sayyidina Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , first to Himself (Sunnat iIaahi), then to His Angels (Sunnat il-Malaa'ika), and after this enjoined on the Muslims (Sunnat il-Mu'mineen) to do the same, by saying, "Undoubtedly, Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet (the Communicator of Unseen News), O you who believe ! Send upon him blessings and salute him fully well in abundance". There cannot be a greater honor for the Believers than this, who have been favored with a share in this Divine Action by Allah Almighty and His Angels.

It is stated in the commentary of the Qur’an, Tafseer Ruh al-Bayaan, "Some Ulema are of the opinion that the meaning of Allah's blessing is, to raise Sayyidina Muhammad Mustafa صلى الله عليه وسلم to al-maqaam il-mahmood (Glorious Station), the place from where he will intercede with Allah Almighty on behalf of his Ummat; the Angels' blessing means their prayer for enhancing the position of Sayyidina Muhammad Mustafa صلى الله عليه وسلم and beseeching forgiveness for his followers. Blessings on the path of the believers means to obey, love and eulogize him."
Tafseer Ruh al-Bayaan further states that the honor and reverence shown to Sayyidina Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is of a much greater degree than shown to Sayyidina Adam عليه السلام to whom only angels were made to bow down (in honor). For in honoring Sayyidina Muhammad Mustafa صلى الله عليه وسلم Allah Almighty has also attributed it to Himself, whereas in the case of Sayyidina Adam عليه السلام Allah Almighty asked only the Angels to show honor.

Having established and expounded on the injunction of the Holy Qur’an we quote a few ahadith of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم pertaining to salawat and salaam.

Imam Tibraani (rahmat ullah `alayh) has recorded this Hadith narrated by Sayyidina Abu Darda رضي الله عنهم: The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"Increase your recitation of salawat on me on Friday because on this day Angels present themselves to me. There is no servant of Allah who recites salawat upon me, except that his voice reaches me from wherever he is". The Companions asked even after your departure ? "He replied, Yes after my departure too, because Allah has made it Haraam upon the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets". [1]

“On Fridays recite the Salawat for me repeatedly ! The Salawat will be conveyed to me." [2] When it was asked whether it would be conveyed to him after his wisaal also, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم answered, "Soil does not rot Prophets' bodies. Whenever a Muslim says the Salawat for me, an Angel informs me of it and says, 'So-and-so's son, so-and-so of your Ummah sent his Salaam and prayed for you.'"

Sahl ibn Sa`d رضي الله عنهم narrates: Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم came out and met Abu Talha. The latter rose and went to him saying: "My father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! I see joy and delight in your countenance?" The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Yes, for Gabriel has just come to me saying: O Muhammad, whoever among your Community invokes blessings upon you once, Allah records for Him ten good deeds, erases from his account ten evil deeds, and raises him ten degrees because of it." [3]

"Invoke blessings upon me abundantly on Friday because it is a day that is (particularly) witnessed and the Angels witness it (abundantly). As soon as a person invokes blessings on me his invocation is shown to me until he ends it." Abu al-Darda' رضي الله عنهم said: "Even after (your) death?" The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: "Verily, Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of Prophets." [4]

Some made the initial addition of the following: "The best of your days is Friday, for in it Adam was created, and in it his soul was taken back, and in it is the blowing of the Horn, and in it is the universal Seizure, therefore invoke blessings upon me abundantly on Friday…” [5]

The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم says in a Hadith, "Definitely there are many Angels of Allah that sojourn the earth and bring the Salaam of my Ummat to me". [6]

Sayyidina 'Abd ar-Rahman bin 'Auf رضي الله عنهم says that one day the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came and entered a date garden. There he performed a very long prostration. Sayyidina 'Abd ar-Rahman رضي الله عنهم feared that Allah had sent death to him. He drew close to him and began to look at him. The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم raised his holy head from the prostration and asked what had happened to him, then he disclosed his fear to him. At this, the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said Sayyidina Jibra'il ('alaihis salaam) asked whether he should not give him glad tidings that Allah said that He would send blessings to the person who recited the Holy Qur'an on him and peace and security to the person who bade Salutations to him.[7]
